James Fulford writes: August 18, 2022, is Virginia Dare's 435th birthday. She was born in the Lost Colony of Roanoke, North Carolina. This map of the Roanoke colony from a 1966 history book, by an author born in 1896: In 1585 [Sir Walter] Raleigh established a colony at Roanoke Island, off the North Carolina coast (left). The sunken ships in this sketch by John White, the first governor, indicate the dangers of this coast, which contains the dreaded Cape Hatteras. White was the grandfather of Virginia Dare, the first child born to English parents in the New World.
